Civic Media: My Social Media Breakfast Boston Presentation

My friend, Bob Collins, heads the Social Media Breakfast Boston gathering and asked me to present in December on creative ways non profits are using emerging media. Fittingly, it was the Social Media Breakfast Boston group’s efforts in December 2008 that sparked my involvement with Tyson Foods and the issue of hunger.

Having consulted with Unicef over the past year, I’ve been highly impressed with their use of social media in developing countries. In working alongside Gerrit Beger, leader of Unicef’s Youth Communications team, I picked up on the term “civic media” which he uses to describe the use of social and mobile media by geographic communities to solve shared problems.

Here are the slides I shared during my presentation illustrating the concept and showcasing Unicef’s innovative approach. Hope you enjoy them.

Getting Others to Care – My Social Media Breakfast CT Presentation

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty tired of “social media” events. But when I was invited to speak at the newly formed Social Media Breakfast Connecticut, I knew I was in for a treat.

First, Ben Kunz is one of the group’s co-founders and he’s become a good friend over the past two years mainly because he and I share a disdain for the self-promoting nature of social media. You might know Ben, since he writes for Bloomberg’s Business Week, Fast Company, and other notable publications – in addition to being the #2 man at the growing Mediassociates.

Second, I was immediately smitten with the premise of the December 2 event, which the other co-founder, Dan Weingrod, described as an Iron Chef-style competition. Three social media strategists would battle against each other to make the best strategy for a non-profit organization – not to be unveiled until that morning. I would be the main speaker during the 30 minutes these three “chefs” would be cooking up with their two “sous chefs” (Quinnipiac University). Then, I would be one of three judges to determine the winner. Darryl Ohrt of Humongo nosed out Suzi Craig of Fathom and John Ross Jr. of Catapult Marketing for the win, but the real winner was the featured non-profit – LEAP For Kids in New Haven. (For the record, no bribes of #FriedDough exchanged hands despite my willingness to take them.)

I had the pleasure of joining a fellow cause contrarian, Dr. Angela Eikenberry, on a cause marketing panel at the ARNOVA 2010 Conference. Thanks to everyone who helped shape and inform my Innovation Lecture Series presentation to NASA yesterday. You’d be encouraged to know that the comments and ideas you shared in my original post were read and shared by a wide circle of NASA leaders.

While I make the return trip home, I wanted to let you see the slides I used for my presentation. I don’t have the time to add commentary or context, so read into them as you please. Rest assured, I plan to articulate key sections in a series of blog posts here and syndicated thru other blogs, too. This presentation has produced a watershed of new thoughts and ideas for me.

Making the Most of Social Media – University of Illinois Brand U Conference Presentation

There is something magical about being on a land grant university campus and the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana is no exception.

Today, I had the pleasure of presenting to a university-wide gathering of marketing and public relations professionals from the various colleges and departments that make up this fine institution.

This past week, I had the pleasure of presenting our formal case study on the Pledge to End Hunger during Mashable’s Social Good Conference. It was inspiring to learn from and share with such a great collection smart and talented people.

After analyzing the large amount of behavioral data that we generated during the campaign, our team has identified six principles of a success for cause marketing online. I shared the high points of this case study in the presentation slide deck below.
